ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Oklahoma State's wrestling team brought home nine champions from the Joe Parisi Open hosted by Lindenwood University on Saturday.
The day was highlighted by seven champs from the gold open division and two champions from the freshman/sophomore division.
“Overall, it seems like we're a little better than what we're wrestling right now,” coach John Smith said. “It felt like we allowed opponents to stay in some matches when we could have separated the score. We need to work a little harder and a little smarter, and I'm looking forward to the trip to Minnesota next weekend.”
Eleven Cowboys advance to the finals of their respective weight classes in the gold division. Winning titles were Eddie Klimara (125), Dean Heil (141), Anthony Collica (157), Alex Dieringer (165), Nolan Boyd (184), Austin Schafer (197) and Austin Marsden (285).
Nine other Cowboys placed in the gold brackets.
Klimara earned a major decision and two wins by decision, including a 4-2 win over Barlow McGhee of Mizzou in an exciting finals match that went into a second sudden victory period.
Heil competed at 141 pounds, where he dominated the competition with two major decisions, a fall and a decision. His finals match against Iowa's Seth Gross resulted in a 12-4 major for the Cowboy.
Sophomore Anthony Collica continues to impress after moving up two weight classes this season to 157 pounds. The Solon, Ohio, native made a solid run through his bracket, taking out two teammates en route to winning the title, including redshirt freshman Chris Koo, whom he defeated in the finals, 4-1.
“It was a good tournament. I'm getting more used to the bigger guys this year after moving up two weight classes from last year,” Collica said. “I felt like I wrestled pretty good today, but I still have a lot to improve on.”
At 165 pounds, national champion Dieringer and freshman Chandler Rogers went head-to-head in the finals. Dieringer pinned his fellow Cowboy in 2:13, wrapping up the tournament with four wins by fall and a major decision.
Boyd took the 184-pound crown with a 7-3 decision over OU's Nathan Marek. The sophomore notched three other wins by decision on the day.
The 197-pound final bout saw two more Cowboys go at it as redshirt sophomore Austin Schafer and transfer Luke Bean competed for the championship. Schafer emerged with a 10-1 major decision, which added to his technical fall and fall that he tallied during the tourney.
All-American Austin Marsden was the final champ for the Pokes in the gold division with his 3-2 win over Mizzou's Devin Mellon. Marsden opened the tournament with a pin over Mike Wright in 6:19, giving him his second fall of the season.
In the freshman/sophomore division, the Cowboys sent four to the finals with Gary Wayne Harding (133) and Jonce Blaylock (149) coming away with titles.
Harding remains undefeated on the season, improving to 10-0 and winning his third open tournament in just as many attempts. Harding faced Josh Alber of Northern Iowa in the 133-pound finals, whom he handled, 5-1.
“I thought I wrestled pretty tough today,” Harding said. “I stayed focused and pushed a solid pace in my matches, but there is always work to be done. Winning the first three tournaments is good but I have to stay focused and continue to take one match at a time and pick out my flaws each match brings. I have to keep working hard every day.”
Blaylock flew through the bracket at 149 pounds, picking up two major decisions and a tech fall in addition to his two wins by decision. A freshman from Berryhill, Okla., Blaylock took on Ouachita Baptist's Tanner Bailey in the finals, where he defeated the Tiger, 10-5.
Eight of the nine OSU freshmen that competed in the freshman/sophomore bracket placed in the top six.
The Pokes travel to Minneapolis, Minn., next week to take on No. 2 Minnesota on Nov. 29.
