Lushkova Earns USTA/ITA Sportsmanship Award
November 10, 2014 | Cowgirl Tennis
NEW YORK CITY – Cowgirl Tennis sophomore Viktoriya Lushkova was honored with the USTA/ITA Sportsmanship Award at last week's USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by Columbia University at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
“When I was a kid, I was a mess. I was throwing balls, getting crazy, talking to the chair umpire," Lushkova said. "That's why I was so surprised to win this award. Naturally, I'm getting more calm, trying to control my game, not control everything around. But I am surprised. It's a great award. I've enjoyed every moment here. It's been so nice to meet so many people."
Lushkova advanced to the championship event in the singles and doubles brackets, after taking both titles in the ITA Central Region Championship in mid-October.
The Cowgirl All-American made it to the singles quarterfinals of the Indoor Championships as the No. 8 seed and the doubles semifinals with fellow Cowgirl Kelsey Laurente.
“I'm proud of Viki for the way that she represented our program and OSU throughout the event,” coach Chris Young said. “She has established herself as one of the elite players in college tennis, but this honor shows that she is gaining respect of others for doing it the right way.”
