Cowgirl Tennis Set to Host ITA Central Regional
October 15, 2014 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State's women's tennis squad will host more than 130 student-athletes from 23 schools around the nation for the ITA Central Region Championship on Oct. 16-20 at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
This is the first time for the Cowgirls to host the event, and it features one of the biggest draws the central region tournament has seen.
"I think it's definitely an advantage any time you get to host an event," coach Chris Young said. "It's on our home courts so our players are comfortable. I think we have a really strong team and players going into this event. Several players have a chance to do really well."
The regional begins Thursday morning at 9 a.m. with a 96-player qualifying bracket, in which three Pokes are seeded. Two wins in the bracket advances a player into the main draw.
Sophomore Carla Tur Mari, the qualifying bracket's No. 3 seed, received a first-round bye, advancing her to the second round, where she will take on the winner of the Nika Munoz (ORU) and Mackenna Maddox (NEB) match.
Seventh-seeded Karyn Guttormsen will face No. 24-seed Tess Herder of Drake at 9 a.m., and No. 14 Maria Alvarez will play Drake's Lea Kozulic at 11:30 a.m.
The other four Cowgirls are seeded in the main draw singles bracket and will begin play Friday morning.
Returning All-American Viktoriya Lushkova and newcomer Kelsey Laurente are the main draw's No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively.
