Cowgirls Defeat 49ers in First Round of NCAA Tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team defeated Long Beach State, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday morning to advance in the tournament for the first time since 2001.
The Cowgirls (16-8) took the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Senior C.C. Sardinha and freshman Maria Alvarez controlled their match on three, defeating Anna Jeczmionka and Anne-Sophie Willems of Long Beach State, 8-3. Meghan Blevins and Lorena Gheorghe won three straight games after trailing 7-6 to take the 9-7 victory on two and clinch the point for Oklahoma State.
The Cowgirls came out strong in singles play, clinching the match quickly with wins on three, four and six. Kanyapat Narattana was the first Cowgirl to finish her match. Narattana controlled her match from start to finish and defeated Long Beach State's Anna Jeczmionka, 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Karyn Guttormsen inflated the Cowgirl lead to three when she knocked off Anne-Sophie Willems on six, 6-4, 6-1.
C.C. Sardinha came through for the Cowgirls in the three spot, defeating Sarah Cantlay in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, to clinch the match for Oklahoma State.
“This was a good win for our team,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “I'm very proud of how our girls played, and I was impressed with our effort in singles play. Now we turn our attention to preparing for tomorrow's second round match.”
The Cowgirls will return to the Los Angeles Tennis Center tomorrow to face the winner of this afternoon's match between top-seeded UCLA and No. 4 seed Army at noon PT. With a win, the Cowgirls would appear in the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history.
