LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team ended its season on Sunday afternoon with a tough 4-0 loss to top-seeded and seventh-ranked UCLA in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The Cowgirls dropped the doubles point with losses on courts two and three. UCLA's Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton took the 8-4 win from Maria Alvarez and C.C. Sardinha on three. Meghan Blevins and Lorena Gheorghe dropped a close match on two, falling 8-6 to Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez to give the Bruins the early lead.
The Bruins carried their momentum into singles play, taking three matches from Oklahoma State on three, five and six.
UCLA's Pamela Montez knocked off senior Cowgirl C.C. Sardinha, 6-2, 6-3, on three. After falling down, 5-1, in her second set against Courtney Dolehide, Oklahoma State's Karyn Guttormsen battled back by winning four straight games to even the set score at five. Dolehide, however, would win the next two games to score the Bruins' third point and put the Cowgirls' backs against the wall.
Catherine Harrison dealt the final blow to the Cowgirls when she defeated freshman Maria Alvarez in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Senior Malika Rose had an impressive showing that was cut short when the match was suspended after UCLA clinched the match. Rose had battled back from trailing, 5-3, in her second set on one to take a 6-5 lead over third-ranked Robin Anderson.
“I am proud of everything this team has accomplished this season,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “I thought today was a great college match between two very good teams. Congratulations to UCLA for a well-played match. They are capable of winning it all, and we were right there with them today. Our program has come a long way and I am thankful for these girls' effort this year.”
Oklahoma State ended the season with a 16-9 overall record, the Cowgirls' best mark in the Chris Young era. The team's 16 victories are the most the Cowgirls have won since 2007.
Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana will travel to Champaign, Ill., later this month to compete in the NCAA doubles championships. The tournament starts May 22.
