OSU Throwers Hit Big Marks, Lead The Way In Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -
Nick Miller launched the second-longest hammer throw in the NCAA this season, and Caitlin Way hit a new personal best as both hammer throwers won their respective events to lead the Oklahoma State men's and women's track and field teams at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday.
Miller's throw of 69.29m/227-04 won the event by nearly six meters. He also threw two other distances that would have won the event. Although Miller's mark puts him at No.2 in the NCAA, earlier this season in Tulsa, Miller hit a mark that would have been No. 1 in the nation, but he threw unattached.
On the women's side, Way was just as dominant. Her throw of 58.85m/193-01 won the event by more than seven meters, and was a new personal best. Her second-longest mark of the day would have won the event as well.
“Nick and Caitlin were both dominant today,” OSU throws coach John Baumann said. “This was a solid day from Nick, but we know from the Tulsa meet that he still has more in him. It was a great showing from Caitlin as well. Personal records are always great.”
On the track, Kevin Colon led the men's side, winning the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:44.10. In the 800 meters, Tyler Payton won his heat in a personal-best 1:51.02. He finished seventh overall.
In the 1,500 meters, Fabian Clarkson took third, in 3:46.67. David Osborn (3:53.14) and Brian Gohlke (3:53.43) set new personal bests.
In the 400 meters, Terrance West ran a 49.74, which was a new personal collegiate best by more than a second, and earned him ninth place in the event.
In the running events on the women's side, Mihaela Bobos cracked the top 10 in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:17.28. Bailey Johnson picked up a personal best in that event, finishing in 2:23.22, which was good enough for 14th.
In the 200 meters, Jasmine Adams earned a new personal best of 26:29, finishing in 18th place. Taylor Stolt finished just ahead of her in 17th, with a 25.93.
“Obviously Nick and Caitlin were the highlights of the day,” OSU Coach Dave Smith said. “We had a mix of good and bad on the track. I thought the guys ran well in the 1.500--we had a couple personal records there and Fabian Clarkson ran well. Justin [Vilhauer] and Jackie [Campos] each ran well for their first steeplechase, and our jumpers did a pretty good job, too. Like I said, there was some good and some bad today.”
The OSU track and field teams will be back in action next weekend, April 18-20, at the Mt. Sac Invitational in Walnut, Calif., and on April 20 at the Michael Johnson Invitational, in Waco, Texas.
