Oklahoma State's third-ranked equestrian team won in dramatic fashion today at the Animal Science Arena in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship after defeating Baylor, 8-7.
"We made some mistakes today that almost cost us the win,” coach Larry Sanchez said. "Tomorrow we are going to have to ride clean to come up with the win. The girls know what they need to fix and are ready to take on K-State tomorrow.”
The Cowgirls jumped out to an early 6-2 lead early today after the Horsemanship and Equitation Over Fences disciplines of the meet but would have to hold off the Bears late rally.
With the overall score tied 7-7, junior Ali Rose came up with a clutch performance defeating her opponent 159-149 to give the Cowgirls the 8-7 victory.
Sophomore Katy Krshka continued her winning ways today with her 15th consecutive Horsemanship victory. Sophomore Lindsey McMullen, senior Marissa Dalton and junior Lauren Halvorson also picked up their points to give the Cowgirls a 4-0 victory in Horsemanship.
Juniors Samantha Harrison and Sammy Elser both had dominating performances today in Equitation Over Fences with Harrison defeating her opponent 166-110 and Elser 160-127.
In Equitation, the Cowgirls would fall to the Bears 3-1 with Ali Rose picking up her point in dramatic fashion.
In Reining, the Cowgirls would fall to the Bears 2-1 with Katy Krshka picking up her second point on the day with a 131.5-122.5 win.
With the win today, the Cowgirls advanced to take on Kansas State in tomorrows Big 12 Championship. This will be the fourth time in five years that the Cowgirls have advanced to the Championship, with the Oklahoma State winning the championship in 2009 and 2012. The Cowgirls split the regular season series 1-1 with Kansas State, defeating them 15-7 at home and losing 11-8 on the road.
Tomorrow's championship action will kick off at 10 a.m. CST.
