TULSA, Okla. -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team had its five-match winning streak broken on Friday when the 28th-ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane defeated the Cowgirls, 6-1, in Tulsa, Okla.
Oklahoma State (6-2) fell down early, losing on courts one and three in doubles to give the doubles point to the Golden Hurricane. Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana hung with the nation's 19th-ranked doubles team made up of Tulsa's Samantha Vickers and Isaura Enrique early in the match, but eventually Vickers and Enrique took control of the match, winning five straight games and defeating Rose and Narattana, 8-3. Cowgirls Maria Alvarez and Lorena Gheorghe fell to Tulsa's Renata Kuricova and Maria Sant'Anna in an 8-2 match.
Tulsa would add to their score to begin singles play. Rose fell to No. 59 Samantha Vickers of Tulsa, 6-3, 6-2. Narattana lost her match as well, falling, 7-6(5), 6-1, to Maria Sant'Anna.
The match was clinched for the Golden Hurricane when Michelle Farley defeated Cowgirl senior C.C. Sardinha, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
After the match had been decided, the courts still in play finished out. Kuricova defeated Karyn Guttormsen, 7-5, 6-3. Tulsa's Saana Saarteinen handed Alvarez her first loss of the spring season when she took the 6-2, 6-3 victory over the freshman.
Even though the Cowgirls struggled, Meghan Blevins finished the match on a high note, winning an epic match over Isaura Enrique, 6-7(4), 6-3, 11-9.
“Tonight was definitely not our best performance, but I give a lot of credit to Tulsa,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “They were prepared and played a great match. I have to do a better job this week in preparing this team for Big 12 play this weekend.”
The Cowgirls will look to bounce back when they take on No. 32 Kansas State this Friday at 11 a.m. in Stillwater.
