School Record Shattered in Seattle
SEATTLE-- Shadrack Kipchirchir blew past the indoor school record in the 5000 meter run by more than six seconds on Friday at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.
Kipchirchir finished in 13:38.57, which landed him in a tie for first, which was too close to determine a winner.
With that time, Kipchirchir not only broke an indoor school record and set a personal best, he surpassed the previous top mark in the nation for the indoor 5000m by more than 12 seconds.
"That was a really big run," OSU Coach Dave Smith said. "A great race. He didn't go in trying to break the record--he was trying to win the race. That's the way to do it. They started kind of slow, but he had an unbelievably fast last 1000 meters and looked like a million bucks."
The previous indoor school record for the 5000m was 13:45.01, set by Colby Lowe in 2010.
"I felt really good the whole time," Kipchirchir said. "I just followed the guy in first. I didn't really have to do much, so when coach told me what I ran, I was just like 'Wow,' I couldn't believe it."
Tomorrow's events begin at 10 a.m. CT.
