OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma State Equestrian's Katy Krshka, a junior on the western team, won the American Quarter Horse Association Collegiate Horsemanship Challenge Thursday night in Oklahoma City, earning the highest score among the four finalists with a score of 240.
The AQHA Collegiate Horsemanship Challenge blends the styles of Intercollegiate Horse Show Association and National Collegiate Equestrian Association competition, drawing the best horsemanship athletes from each organization. The event featured 16 riders competing in three rounds over two days of head-to-head match-ups.
On Wednesday night, Krshka defeated Ashley Winters 145-135 in the first round of 16. In the second round, Krshka defeated Kelly Boviard in a close match by a score of 147.5-147.
Thursday night showcased the final four consisting of Krshka, Molli Jacobs from Texas A&M, Paige Stawicki from Georgia and Austin Griffith from Ohio State. Krshka was the only returning rider from the inaugural Collegiate Challenge who qualified for the 2013 challenge finals.
"I got to represent the entire college and my entire team," Krshka said. "To be able to go out there and represent them and do them proud, I felt, was a really cool thing to do."
Krshka and the Cowgirl equestrian team will return to competition in 2014 when they travel to Dover, Del., where they will take on Auburn and Delaware State, respectively, on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
