STILLWATER, Okla. -
The seventh-ranked Oklahoma State equestrian team hit its stride Saturday in its home opener, defeating South Dakota State, 15-3 at Animal Science Arena, for its first victory of the season.
"It was a great day," coach Larry Sanchez said. "Every ride I watched, I couldn't have been more proud of the way they executed and the way they tried. All of them went in there with the thought of scoring the point for the team. They all worked to that end. In a couple of instances it didn't turn out that way, but you can't fault them for going in there and trying their hardest."
The western team improved to 3-0 on the season, winning, 8-2. In horsemanship, the Cowgirls (1-2) swept the Jack Rabbits (0-4), earning a 5-0 victory. Junior Lindsey McMullen earned herself a Most Outstanding Performer award for her 76.5-71 victory against Sarah Bowen. Junior Katy Krshka also scored 76.5 points, earning her third horsemanship victory this season.
In reining (1-2), the Cowgirls picked up a thrilling victory, winning on the final ride of the day, when sophomore Justine Peters defeated Danielle Baker, 70-67, giving reining the 3-2 win. Krshka earned her second Most Outstanding Performer award of the season when she defeated Caroline Lesousky, 72.5-62. Senior Mackenzie Fugitt squeezed out a 68-67 victory against Christina Dexter to give the Cowgirls another point.
"It was really good for us,” Krshka said. “It helped being at home. We were in our comfort zone. Not only that, everyone rode up to the bar, even past it for a lot of girls. I think we had a really good showing."
The hunter seat team (1-2) picked up its first victory of the season, winning 4-0 in equitation, and 3-1 in equitation over fences.
In equitation (1-2), senior Sammy Elser picked up her first Most Outstanding Performer award for her 85-76 victory against Santana Wright. Senior Samantha Harrison also scored 85 points for her ride, defeating Natalie Howard, 85-80.
In the equitation over fences event, Elser started the scoring for the Cowgirls, defeating Jessica Andronowitz 86-84. Harrison picked up her second victory of the day in her ride against Jordan Goodall (86-74), and junior Maggie Gampfer earned a one-point victory against Howard, winning 72-71.
"I think everyone across the board rode really well and it really paid off today,” Harrison said. “I'm so excited for the girls. They put in a lot of hard work and it's starting to pay off."
The Cowgirls will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule Saturday, Nov. 16, when they take on Big 12 foe TCU at 10 a.m. at Animal Science Arena.
