FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma State battled to yet another draw Sunday, this time playing a scoreless double overtime contest against TCU at Garvey-Rosenthal Field.
The Cowgirls are now 5-3-5 overall and 1-1-2 in Big 12 Conference play. OSU is 2-0-5 in overtime games this season, and the five ties is a new school record, one more than the 2008 team.
Coach Colin Carmichael's squad racked up 21 shots in the match, 18 of those after intermission, and recorded nine of its 10 corner kicks after the halftime break.
“In the first half, we didn't play up to our capability so we felt like we wasted 45 minutes – maybe if we'd played to the same level as we did in the second half we might have scored,” Carmichael said. “In the second half and overtime, the effort was very good and the buildup play was great – we created numerous chances and just didn't score.
“That's soccer. There have been other games where we've maybe had five chances and scored twice and won. In this game, we had 10 or 12 chances and didn't score and ended up with the tie.”
After being outshot 5-3 in the opening half, the Cowgirls seized the attack out of the halftime locker room, and OSU's opportunities were numerous.
In the 61st minute, Krissi Killion hit the crossbar on a shot from nine-yards out after a great cross from Joanna Robertson, and 10 minutes later, Kelsey Bass delivered a free kick that Kristen Kelley sent on frame before TCU goalie Vittoria Arnold leapt and punched the ball over the crossbar.
Next it was Madison Mercado who nearly scored. After beating a charging Arnold, Mercado was thwarted by a TCU defender who made a great play to the kick ball over the end line before Mercado could get off an open-net shot. And on the ensuing corner kick, Kelley just missed her first goal of season once again as her header deflected off the near post.
The frustrations of creating chances and near misses continued until the final whistle as OSU failed to score for the third time this season.
“Our movement, our energy and our buildup play into the final third was tremendous,” Carmichael said. “We must have had 10 clean chances, and we hit the bar twice, the post once and their keeper made two or three really good saves.
“We were really close, and it was just one of those days it didn't go for us. Nobody means to miss. Maybe on another day we'll get five chances and score three – that's the way soccer is.”
OSU will be off this weekend and will return to action Oct. 18 when the Cowgirls host Texas at 6 p.m.
