NORMAN, Okla. - Allie Stephenson's golden goal with 46 seconds left in the second overtime period lifted Oklahoma State to a 2-1 win over Bedlam-rival Oklahoma Friday night at John Crain Field.
The win was OSU's first in Big 12 Conference play this season as they improved to 5-3-4 overall and 1-1-1 in the league. The Cowgirls are now 19-3-3 all time against OU.
The Cowgirls trailed for most of the contest before Natalie Calhoun's first-career goal tied the game with just over four minutes left in regulation, setting the stage for Stephenson to provide the heroics in extra time.
"As far as our overall play tonight, it wasn't a great performance by us to be honest - we played hard, we fought hard, but we didn't play as well as we need to and our kids know that," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "Having said that, we didn't play at our best, but we showed a lot of determination and found a way to win."
OU (3-8-1, 0-2-0) took an early lead less than four minutes into the match when Zoe Dickson flicked in an Abby Hodgen cross from 12-yards out past OSU goalie Michela Ongaro.
OSU owned a slim 3-2 advantage in shots in the opening half, with each of those shots on goal. The Cowgirls' two best scoring chances came late in the opening half, but both were saved by OU goalie Kassidie Stade as she stopped blasts from Stephenson and Krissi Killion.
Opportunities came more often for the Cowgirls in the second half as they picked up the attack, but OSU simply couldn't break onto the scoreboard.
But after 85:57 of action, the drought finally ended. After the Cowgirls won a corner kick, Kelsey Bass sent the kick into the box where Calhoun headed it into the back of the net for the equalizer.
At the end of regulation, the score remained knotted at 1-1. Neither team managed a shot in the first overtime period, and most of the second overtime went the same way.
Then at the 108:40 mark, Killion dribbled through the defense and nearly had a clean look at the goal before Dickson made a game-saving play by blocking her shot.
However, the ensuing corner kick provided the game winner. After the ball deflected off a defender, Stephenson drilled a left-footed shot past Stade to set off an OSU celebration.
"Bedlam is never pretty soccer - it's a fight basically, and it's who wants it more," said Stephenson, whose goal was her fifth of the season and second game winner. "The first half we came out flat, and we talked at halftime about how we needed to win this game. It feels great that we were able to come out and fight hard and get the job done."
The Cowgirls return to action Sunday when they face TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, at 1 p.m.
