ATHENS, Ga. -
The Oklahoma State women's tennis team notched its second win of the season on Monday, defeating No. 73 Columbia in the team's second match of ITA Kickoff Weekend, 4-3.
Oklahoma State (2-1) looked to bounce back from Sunday's tough 4-3 loss to No. 70 Georgia State. The Cowgirls took the advantage early, clinching the doubles point with a dominant 8-3 victory from Meghan Blevins and Karyn Guttormsen, as well as a big 8-6 win by Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana over the No. 37 doubles team made up of Columbia's Bianca Sanon and Tiana Takenaga.
The Lions quickly took a 2-1 lead in the first two matches of singles play. Meghan Blevins was handed her first loss of the season by No. 81 Bianca Sanon, who defeated Blevins 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot. Cowgirl C.C. Sardinha also fell short on Monday, losing to No. 85 Kanika Vaidya 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 at No. 3.
Freshman Maria Alvarez tied the score at two-a-piece with her hard fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Columbia's Lauren Stratman. Rose gave the Cowgirls a 3-2 advantage when she knocked off No. 24 Nicole Bartnik in three sets to pull off the upset at the No. 1 spot.
Guttormsen came through for the Cowgirls at No. 6, notching the 6-3, 6-2 win over Ioana Alecsiu to clinch the victory for Oklahoma State. Narattana battled hard in the final match of the day, but was unable to add to the score, falling to Crystal Leung 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8).
“This was a tough event with four very good teams,” Cowgirl Tennis coach Chris Young said. “We had to raise our level of play this weekend and it will help us moving forward. I thought each girl improved this weekend and I love the way this team competes. We look forward to preparing for our first home match in two weeks.”
The Cowgirl Tennis team will be back in action on Feb. 9 and 10 for a pair of home matches against Minnesota and Arkansas.
