Cowgirl Tennis Set to Take On Wichita State

Oklahoma State's women's tennis team will look to start the spring season on a positive note when it travels to Wichita, Kan., for a showdown with Wichita State on Monday, Jan. 21. The match is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. CT.
Matchup History
Monday will mark the 25th time that these two programs have met. Oklahoma State is 20-4 in past meetings.
Last Meeting vs. Wichita State
Oklahoma State's last meeting with Wichita State was on January 28, 2012. The Cowgirls pulled out a narrow victory in Stillwater in that matchup, winning 4-3.

Starting Strong
The Cowgirls have a history of starting seasons off on the right foot, notching a 25-8 record in season openers since the 1978-79 season.
Familiar Territory
Oklahoma State women's tennis coach Chris Young will be returning to familiar territory when the Cowgirls travel to Wichita State on Monday. Young coached at Wichita State for five years before coming to Oklahoma State in 2009.
Fresh Faces
The Cowgirl Tennis program welcomes two new members that will be joining the team for the 2013 spring season. Karyn Guttormsen is a 5'8” sophomore from Kenosha, Wis., that recently transferred from Florida International. Lorena Gheorghe is a 5'6” sophomore from Pitesti, Romania. Gheorghe came to Oklahoma State after spending a year at the Universitatea Ecologica din Bucuresti.
Cowgirls in the Rankings
The Cowgirls will start their spring schedule as the 40th ranked team in the nation, according to the latest rankings that were released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Thursday, Jan. 3.
The Cowgirls were represented in the ITA singles and doubles rankings as well. The doubles team made up of senior C.C. Sardinha and sophomore Meghan Blevins earned the 39th ranking in doubles. Blevins also made an appearance in the singles rankings, coming in at 89th.
Sizing up the Opponent
Wichita State will enter the season ranked as the 62nd team in the country, according to the ITA team rankings.
The Shockers kicked off their fall season on Wednesday with a 7-0 shutout win over Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla., and have a date set with Oklahoma in Norman on Saturday before returning home to Wichita for Monday's match.
Climbing the Record Books
With three more singles victories, senior Cowgirl Malika Rose can claim the tenth spot on the school's all-time singles wins list. Rose has 53 singles wins in her career going into her final spring season, and currently sits at No. 11 on the list behind Martina Hautova, who had 55 singles wins during her time at Oklahoma State.
Aiming for the Tournament
After earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament in 2012, Oklahoma State enters the spring season looking to make back-to-back tournament appearances for the first time since the 1990-91 seasons.
