First Time Starters
Oklahoma State had 10 new starters in the lineup against Savannah State tonight. That list includes quarterback Wes Lunt, center Evan Epstein, defensive end Ryan Robinson, safety Shamiel Gary, receivers Josh Stewart, Blake Jackson and Charlie Moore, defensive tackles Calvin Barnett and James Castleman, and offensive lineman Daniel Koenig.
Stadium Numbers
Oklahoma State has now won seven straight home games after going undefeated at Boone Pickens Stadium in 2011. It was OSU's first undefeated home season since 1984 and just the 11th in school history. The school record for consecutive home wins is 10 (from Sept. 21, 2002 until Oct. 18, 2003).
Opening Acts
• The Cowboys set a modern-era school record for points scored in a season opener with 84 points, besting the previous record of 65 set against Washington St. in 2010. The most points OSU has ever scored in a game was 134 against Phillips in 1914.
• Oklahoma State is now 66-40-5 all-time in season openers, including 7-1 under Mike Gundy. The Cowboys haven't dropped a season opener since a 2007 loss at Georgia. In home openers, OSU now has an all-time record of 78-28-5. OSU has also now won a school-record 17 straight home openers, dating back to 1995 against Nebraska (the first game for then-OSU head coach Bob Simmons).
• In eight season openers under Mike Gundy, OSU is averaging 44.3 points per game. In home openers since 2006, the Cowboys are averaging 58.5 points per game.
• The OSU offense has now scored over 60 points for the third straight season opener, with an average of 70 points over the past three years.
• OSU is now 24-4 in September under Mike Gundy.
Freshman Phenom
True freshman quarterback Wes Lunt set a school record with a perfect completion percentage (11-11), edging out Bobby Reid's 90 percent (9-10) effort against Baylor in 2006.
Career Win No. 60 For Gundy
Mike Gundy recorded his 60th career win at OSU tonight, ranking him second all-time behind only Gundy's college coach, Pat Jones (62-60-3).
Streaking in Stillwater
Oklahoma State added on to several streaks in tonight's game against Savannah State.
• OSU has had a scoring drive of less than two minutes in 27 straight games.
• The OSU defense has intercepted a pass in 12 straight games, dating back to last season's 37-14 win over Arizona.
• OSU has scored at least 37 points in 14 straight homes games and has been held below 40 points just twice in its last 14 home games.
• OSU has forced at least two turnovers in 12 straight games.
Career Highs
• Running back Joseph Randle recorded his 9th multi-touchdown game of his career with two touchdowns in the first half.
• Randle also had his 7th career game with at least 100 rushing yards.
• Running back Jeremy Smith set a career high with three touchdowns tonight, surpassing his previous record of two against Texas in 2011.
• Smith also recorded his third career multi-touchdown game of his career with three touchdowns tonight.
• Desmond Roland recorded his first career touchdown on a six yard run in the second quarter.
• Roland also set career highs in carries (9), rushing yards (107) and rushing touchdowns (3).
• Running back Corey Bennett and wide receivers Austin Hays, John Goodlett and Brandon Sheperd each recorded their first career touchdown.
Breaking Records
• OSU set a modern-era school record with 84 points, surpassing the previous high of 70 scored against Kansas in 2011. It's the most OSU has scored in a game since 1916 when the team scored 117 points against Southwestern.
• OSU also set the Big-12 record for points in a game, topping Texas Tech's 80 in 2005 against Sam Houston St.
• OSU tied a school record with 35 points scored in a quarter, matching the record set against Kansas (2011), Southern Illinois (1972) and Baylor (2002).
• The Cowboys set a new record with nine rushing touchdowns, exceeding the previous record of seven against UTEP in 1977.
• OSU tied a new school record with nine punt returns, matching the nine the team had against Missouri State (1996) and against Texas Tech (1943).
Notable Statistics
• The OSU defense recorded a shutout at Boone Pickens Stadium for the first time since 2001 against Northwestern St. It also recorded the first shutout in a season opener since blanking Wichita State in 1975.
• OSU had two players eclipse 100 rushing yards in tonight's game for the first time since last year's Bedlam matchup in Stillwater. It is also the 32nd time OSU has had multiple players reach 100 rushing yards in one game.
• The Cowboys had 102 punt return yards in the first half of tonight's game. OSU had 79 punt return yards over the course of the entire 2011 season.
Moving On Up
Three Cowboys moved up the all-time career lists in their respective statistical categories in tonight's game:
• With 12 points tonight, running back Joseph Randle moved into 15th on the all-time scoring list at OSU, tying Bob Fenimore with 186 points.
• With two rushing touchdowns tonight, running back Joseph Randle moved into sixth on the all-time rushing touchdowns list at OSU with 28 touchdowns.
• With 61 kickoff return yards, cornerback Justin Gilbert moved into 2nd on the all-time kickoff return yards list at OSU with 1,462 kickoff return yards.
• With 12 points, K/P Quinn Sharp moved into 21st on the all-time scoring list at OSU with 157 points.
• Wide receiver Tracy Moore did not play in tonight's game due to a violation of team rules.
