Oklahoma State vs. Savannah State Postgame Quotes
Sept. 1, 2012
Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy
Opening Statement
"Obviously, that was a good win for our guys. Everybody got to play, which is enjoyable for me. A lot of guys on our team that work hard in the spring, and put a lot of time and effort in in the summer and during four weeks of preseason camp, it's good for them to be able to get out on the field, get in front of their families, and play some college football. Coaches will be able to evaluate just about everybody on our team that played in the game today, and correct the mistakes that we had with the first group. (We) need to take better care of the ball. We put the ball on the ground a couple of times. That disappointed me. But other than that, for the most part, I thought our guys executed fairly well...We'll be in a different situation next week, obviously, playing at Arizona. So we have to have a great week of practice, get back to work tomorrow night, take a day off, and heavy day on Tuesday."
On What The Team Takes From Tonight's Win
"I hope that we run well on defense. At times, I saw our guys running across the field fast, and I hope it holds true throughout the season. We were able to function on offense at a quick pace with a new quarterback, so I was pleased with that early in the game. I'm sure there are some other things, but right off hand, those are some thing that went well early in the game."
On Taking The First Team Out Early
"You'd like to get them some more work, but there comes a point when you've got to take them out, and we just thought it was the right thing to do. Get the other kids on the field and get them a chance to play."
On Getting Freshmen Playing Time
"We were able to play...about eight or nine freshmen, I think...We need to get those guys some work, because as we get into conference play, we would like to try to keep as many people as we can healthy, but we all know that guys get nicked up, and you have to work other guys, and when you doo that, you'd like to make sure that they have some experience prior to just getting thrown into the fire. That was our goal. We're playing quite a few skill players as freshmen now."
On Wes Lunt
"Well I listen to what's being said on the head sets, and I think that, for the most part, he played pretty well and (did) what they asked him to do. (He) got the ball where it was supposed to be, and distributed it. I think it's important that we all realize it's going to change in the next week. It's hard to really say where we are as a football team. A month from now, we'll have a much better feel for who we are and where we are at."
On Coach Bill Young's absence
"Any time you lose a coach, it can affect your team. We have some young coaches that have been with us for a number of years, and we have a lot of faith in them. They work hard and do a good job, but essentially we're down a coach. We want to get him back as soon as possible, and he wants to be back as soon as possible. There's some communication that has to take place there, because for however many years now, he's been calling defenses and that communication has to get out onto the field, so you have a new guy calling them. And then once he's made those calls, recording what's going on on the field, there's one less guy doing that. So, there are some adjustments that have to go on."
Oklahoma State Players
WR Isaiah Anderson
On Wes Lunt
“It's good to know that he can get the ball out there. We tried to help him as much as we could out there on the edge. I'm looking forward to him progressing throughout the season. Before the game, he wasn't nervous at all. I just went up to him and told him to keep doing what he's been doing in practice. He didn't seem to get rattled at all. We're expecting big things from him for the rest of the year.”
On The Team's Efficiency
“It gives us hope for the rest of the season. Hopefully, we can continue to keep our level of play up that high, and we're just looking forward to next week.”
QB J.W. Walsh
On Playing Collegiately With His High School Teammate
“It felt good to be able to throw a pass to [Stewart] and to keep that connection. It was really special. Not many people get to go to the next level with people they hung out with in high school, and to have that was a special opportunity.”
On Playing Time
“Any opportunity I get to get on the field, I'm going to take advantage of it and do what I can for the team. For the most part, whenever they call on me, I'm going to do my part. It was a lot of fun tonight. I was fortunate to get the snaps I had tonight, and I'm thankful for that.”
RB Desmond Roland
On Scoring
“I knew coming in that I would get to play a lot and I just had to be ready. When [Monken] called my name, I took advantage of it. It felt really good. It was my first time scoring and I just give all the glory to God. I'm thankful to Coach Monken for giving me the chance to show that I can play. At first, I didn't know how to react. I just soaked in the moment. Thanks to the O-line for giving me a chance to score. It was a great experience.”
On Three Quarterbacks Playing
“It was new to me. I didn't know all three of them were going to play. All three of them are good quarterbacks, and we're going to need all of them down the road.”
RB Joseph Randle
On Wes Lunt
“Sometimes, I forget he's a freshman. He came out and did everything the coaches asked him to do. He came out with a lot of poise, and I'm glad for him.”
On Playing Time
“I would have like to play a little longer, but that's part of the nature of it. We had a situation like that with KU, and everybody deserves to play. They all deserve it because they go through the same thing we do, and the work hard. Corey Bennett had a great game. He has been doing that in practice.”
Offensive coordinator Todd Monken
On tonight's performance
“I thought we did some good things. We got a little sloppy with the second unit. That was frustrating because we didn't take care of the ball. At the end of the day, you want to get a lot of guys playing.”
On The First-Team Tempo
“It was good. I thought we went fast. We were trying to go with some tempo and some speed. There was some positives to what we did, and there were some negatives with Wes not getting to play as much. That's part of it.”
Savannah State Head Coach Steve Davenport
Opening Statement
“Tremendously classy act by Coach Gundy and his staff, this thing could have gotten even worse. It was obvious that they were a much better team than we were. I am graciously appreciative of the way he handled the game.”
On What He Learned About His Team
“There were some proud moments and sometimes you have to take baby steps. We will watch the film, but there were some things we saw that we were proud of. Our kids fought. We wanted to play until there were three zeroes on the clock. I think for the most part we did that. People will look at the score of the game, and I know that quote might be hard to believe. They are pretty good. They will have just as good of a season this year as they had last year.”
On OSU
“I have to think they're pretty good because if not, we are really bad. Obviously they are a talented team. Number one was as good as we thought he was coming in. We knew the freshman quarterback was a good football player. You don't come to a program like this and win the starting job unless you're good. We knew defensively they were solid. Glenn Spencer does a tremendous job. Give them the credit.”
On How The Team Will be Going Forward
“Our number one goal was not to win either of these games. Our goal is to win the conference championship. We have got another preseason game in Tallahassee next week then our season gets underway. That is where we are.”
