LAWRENCE, Kan. - Oklahoma State's women's golf team opened play at the Big 12 Championship on Friday with a 315 score to stand in third place at Lawrence Country Club.
Battling conditions that saw wind gusts surpass 30 mph, the Cowgirls' 35-over score put them two shots off the pace of Baylor for second place at the par-70, 6,038-yard layout. Iowa State posted a 31-over 311 for the low round of the day.
"This was a big test of golf out here today with these conditions. I just wanted our girls to keep plugging along," OSU head coach Alan Bratton said. "We don't ever talk about the score much because this is a 54-hole event. Obviously, we left some shots out there, but so did everybody else. We had some girls pretty high over par early that hung in there, so I'm pleased with that."
Three players shared the individual lead after posting opening 75s. Baylor's Hayley Davis, Oklahoma's Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Iowa State's Sasikarn On-Iam all finished at five-over par for the day and a shot clear of a quartet of players that included a pair of Cowgirls.
Sophomore Amy Ruengmateekhun and junior Kelsey Vines each posted 6-over 76s to finish among the group tied for fourth place.
Sophomore Jayde Panos finished the day tied for 21st place after posting an 80, while freshman Courtney Ferguson's 83 tied her for 30th place.
Senior Jocelyn Alford's 85 tied her for 39th place.
The Cowgirls will begin their second round tomorrow at 10 a.m. and will be paired with Oklahoma.
