Norman, Okla. – Oklahoma's fifth-ranked softball team hit three home runs off Cowgirl pitchers, including two solo homers by Lauren Chamberlain, as the Sooners defeated Oklahoma State 7-1 and swept the three-game season series.
Chamberlain hit her first home run with one out in the bottom of the first over the left-centerfield wall, establishing a new single-season school record. The Sooner first baseman made it 2-0 in the third when she again hit a bomb with one out, this time over the fence in right centerfield.
In the bottom of the fourth, OU took a 5-0 lead on a three-run home run by Erica Sampson, who entered the game after left fielder Brittany Williams injured her leg chasing down a foul ball. Sampson not only made a nice play on a long fly ball hit by Cowgirl Julie Ward, but followed up with the three-run bomb in her first at-bat of the game.
The Cowgirls got their only run of the game on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. With one out, freshman catcher Taylor Woodall was hit by a pitch from Sooner hurler Keilani Ricketts. Ari Morrison followed with a bunt single, advancing pinch runner Hannah Bowen to second. A base hit up the middle by Shelby Davis loaded the bases, and Ricketts hit Samantha Chrisman, pinch hitting for Kelsey Anchors, with a pitch, scoring Bowen from third. Ricketts responded by striking out Tamara Brown and Julie Ward to end the inning, two of her seven strikeouts.
The Sooners added two more runs in the bottom half of the frame on a walk, a double by Ricketts and a sacrifice fly by Jessica Shults. OSU threatened to score again in the seventh when Woodall reached on a dropped third strike. Morrison followed with a bunt single, but was called out for runner's interference on an infield hit by Davis. The next two batters grounded out to end the game.
Oklahoma State (23-19 overall, 6-9 Big 12) will host the 25th-ranked Baylor Bears (28-17, 5-11) in a three-game series this weekend, starting Friday at 7 pm at the Cowgirl Softball Complex.
