Stillwater, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's offense scored two runs on just three hits off Baylor pitcher Courtney Repka, but the Cowgirls fell 4-2 to the No. 25 Bears here Friday night in the first game of a three-game series.
After three scoreless innings, Baylor put a run on the scoreboard first as Holly Holl led off the frame with a base hit and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kaitlyn Thumann. The Bears added two more runs in the fifth. Clare Hosack led off the inning with a single and with one out, scored on a double by Kathy Shelton. After moving to third on a sacrifice hit, Shelton scored when Cowgirl second baseman Ari Morrison dropped a pop up that would have been the third out.
Baylor took a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning on three-straight base hits, including a double by Jordan Strickland. Catcher Taylor Woodall made the first out on a squeeze bunt by Hosack when she was able to field the ball and get back to the plate in front of Thumann. With two outs, Shelton hit a sharp grounder down the foul line towards third, but Gessenia DeLaCruz made a nice play to stop the ball, holding Strickland at third. Kayce Walker flew out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Oklahoma State cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth. Morrison led off with a base hit, and Shelby Davis followed with a double down the left-field line. With runners at second and third, senior Kelsey Anchors hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Morrison. It was the ninth sac fly of her career, tying for the third most in school history.
Hosack, the Baylor catcher, tried to pick off Davis at third after the sacrifice fly moved her over, but the throw got past Megan Turk at third, allowing Davis to score and cut the OSU deficit to 4-2. Tamara Brown grounded out and Julie Ward popped up to finish off the inning. Repka sat down the Cowgirls in the seventh, improving to 15-9 on the year.
The Cowgirls, now 23-20 overall and 6-10 in the Big 12, still lead the Bears (29-17, 6-11) by a half-game in the league standings. Due to the potential for rain on Sunday, OSU and BU will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 pm. It will also be Senior Day, with the five Cowgirl seniors being recognized beforehand.
