Stillwater, Okla. -- After Oklahoma State scored one run in the first inning, Texas A&M's Mel Dumezich threw 6-2/3 scoreless innings as the Aggies defeated the Cowgirls 7-1 here Sunday afternoon at the Cowgirl Softball Complex.
OSU scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the first. With one out, A&M starting pitcher Lindsey Sisk walked three-straight batters to load the bases. Cowgirl senior Chelsea Garcia hit a single to left field, scoring Sammy Jo Diffendaffer. Dumezich came on following Garcia's base hit, and forced Gessenia DeLaCruz into a fielder's choice as Tamara Brown was forced out at home. Stephanie Brewer struck out to end the inning with the Cowgirls leading, 1-0.
Texas A&M got their bats going in the third. Lindsey Sisk led off the frame with a double down the leftfield line, then scored one out later on a single up the middle by leadoff hitter Natalie Villarreal. With two outs, Cowgirl starter Simone Freeman intentionally walked Meagan May, and Cassie Tysarczyk followed with a base hit to right, scoring Villarreal. A run-scoring double by Nicole Morgan forced Freeman from the circle. A throwing error by reliever Kat Espinosa allowed another run to score, but she struck out Taran Tyler to end the bleeding with OSU down, 4-1.
The Aggies added a run in the fifth when May led off the inning with a drive to left field. Brown appeared to make the catch, but the ball bounced out of her glove and over the fence for a home run, May's eighth of the year. Texas A&M added an unearned run in the sixth and another in the seventh for the final 7-1 score.
Oklahoma State (17-15 overall, 2-5 Big 12) will step away from conference play this week as the Cowgirls travel to Conway, Ark., to play a non-league game against Jackson State. First pitch on the Central Arkansas campus is set for 2 pm.
