ST. LOUIS – Entering Friday evening's session at the at the 2012 NCAA Championships, the No. 3 Oklahoma State wrestling team is in fifth place with 50 points. Penn State leads the field with 78.5 points.
Three Cowboy wrestlers are still in the hunt for a national title. Junior Jordan Oliver, the defending national champion at 133 pounds, sophomore Chris Perry and senior Cayle Byers will all compete in the championship semifinals this evening.
Oliver advanced through this morning's session with his third first-period pin of the tournament. He took down No. 8-seed Zachery Steven of Michigan with a minute left in the first period and turned him for a two-point nearfall before securing the pin.
The Easton, Pa., native now has 12 first-period falls and 18 overall this season. He is one of only two competitors in the field of 330 to pin all of his opponents in the opening period of the tournament and has wrestled a total of only 6:12 in his three bouts combined.
Perry won in overtime to secure his spot in the 174-pound semifinals. He entered sudden victory in a 2-2 tie with No. 7 Jordan Blanton of Illinois, and earned the win after Blanton was called for stalling in the tiebreaker. The win improved Perry's unblemished record to 29-0.
Wrestling at 197 pounds, Byers became OSU's third semifinalist with a 5-4 decision over James Nakashima of Nebraska. Byers trailed 3-1 entering the final period, but rallied with an escape, takedown and ride to earn a one-point win.
Senior Jamal Parks wrestled in the quarterfinal round for the Cowboys, but lost a tough match to No. 7 Dylan Ness of Minnesota. He earned a takedown in the opening period, but Ness answered with a pair of escapes to tie it at 2-2. He started the third period down and nearly escaped several times, but Ness was able to hang on throughout the period and win, 3-2, on riding time.
Four Cowboys started the day in the wrestleback and were eliminated. Josh Kindig, Dallas Bailey, and Austin Marsden were all knocked out of the tournament in the third round, and Jon Morrison lost in the fourth round after defeating Ryak Finch of Iowa State in the third, 4-0.
