ST. LOUIS – After one day at the 2012 NCAA Championships, third-ranked Oklahoma State sits in third place with four wrestlers still competing for an individual national title.
Junior Jordan Oliver, senior Jamal Parks, sophomore Chris Perry and senior Cayle Byers all won both of their matches today to advance to Friday's championship quarterfinals.
“Overall it was a good day,” coach John Smith said. “I'm not disappointed. Know that matches get a lot tougher tomorrow and we need to wrestle better as we go deeper into these rounds.”
Oliver, the defending NCAA champion at 133 pounds, turned in one of the most dominating performances of the day as he was one of just four wrestlers in the field of 330 to earn two first-period falls. He pinned Frank Martellotti of Penn State in 2:07 in the opening round and Shelton Mack of Pittsburg in 1:30 in round two.
The Easton, Pa., native now has 11 first-period falls this year and 17 falls overall.
Parks advanced with a pair of decisions. The Tulsa, Okla., native defeated Virginia's Augustus Sako, 7-2, in the opening round and knocked off Josh Wilson of Utah Valley by the same score in the second round. With those wins, he remains undefeated on the year at 32-0.
Perry also kept his perfect record intact with a pair of decisions. The Stillwater native won 9-4 over Chris Moon of Virginia Tech and 6-2 over Curran Jacobs of Michigan State to improve to 28-0 on the year.
The final OSU quarterfinalist of the day was Byers. The senior transfer picked up a first round major decision over Boise State's Brent Chriswell, 12-3, and followed that with a 5-2 win over No. 12-seed Joseph Kennedy.
Byers, from Chugiak, Alaska, is now 25-3 on the year with 14 bonus-point wins.
Three more Cowboys wrestled in the first consolation round during the evening session, with Josh Kindig and Austin Marsden adding team points with wins. Kindig scored a late takedown against Levi Wolfensperger of Northern Iowa to win a 14-6 major decision, and Marsden outlasted Indiana's Adam Chalfant to win, 4-2, in the second sudden victory period.
Albert White was only Oklahoma State athlete eliminated Thursday, dropping decisions to No. 10-seed Anthony Jones of Michigan State and Jake O`Hara of Columbia.
Tomorrow's action is set to begin at 10 a.m. Fans can watch all the action live on ESPN3.com or follow live updates through the official team Twitter account (@CowboyWrestling).
