CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- The 21st-ranked Oklahoma State softball team split two games in a late night at the Cathedral City Classic as they beat Northwestern 4-3 and lost to No. 15 Arizona 8-0. The Cowgirls are 2-2 this weekend and 6-6 on the season.
The Cowgirls and Northwestern Wildcats went back and forth in an intense first game of the evening. Oklahoma State started early as Julie Ward hit an RBI-single up the middle to score Ari Morrison from third. The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI-single through the left side to score their runner on third. Northwestern (3-6) took the lead in the third inning with an RBI-triple hit by Marisa Best. The Cowgirls tied it back up in the fifth when Morrison led off the inning with a double. She scored on a triple by Tamara Brown.
The Wildcats tied it back up at two in the bottom of the fifth. Best picked up her second RBI of the game as she hit a single to centerfield that scored the runner on third.
After a single by Tarah Ettinger and a walk for Kelsea Schultz to put runners on, senior Kelsey Anchors lasered a hit to center field and scored both runners. The Cowgirls regained the lead and would keep it to win the game.
Sophomore Simone Freeman picked up her third win of the season for Oklahoma State. She threw six innings, allowed eight hits for just two earned runs, struck out six and walked one. Junior Kat Espinosa threw the final inning of the game and picked up her first save of the year.
In the late game, the Cowgirls were shut out by No. 15 Arizona (10-4). Espinosa had been throwing a one-hitter until the fifth when the Wildcats hit three home runs and scored six runs in the inning. They hit a fourth home run in the sixth to make it 8-0.
Kenzie Fowler (4-0) picked up the win for Arizona after throwing six innings, allowing two hits, striking out nine and walked two. The Cowgirls wrap up the Cathedral City Classic tomorrow when they face No. 19 Oregon at 12.
