Cowgirls Split Two Games

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- The 21st-ranked Oklahoma State softball team played two games in the first day of the Cathedral City Classic, losing the first game to Pacific 5-0 and winning the second against BYU 3-2.
The Cowgirls (5-5) scored first against the Cougars (7-4) in the second game of the day. Julie Ward hit a triple in the fourth inning and scored as Chelsea Garcia followed with a single through the left side. BYU responded in the top of the sixth when they scored one run off a Cowgirl throwing error and another off an RBI-single by Katie Manuma.
In the bottom of the same inning, the Cowgirls regained the lead. With Kelsea Schultz and Chelsea Garcia on second and third, Tarah Ettinger hit a double down the left field line and scored them both. The defense held up in the seventh and the Cowgirls won 3-2.
Junior Kat Espinosa threw the complete game for OSU. She is now 2-2 on the season after allowing four hits for one earned run, striking out 10 and walking just two.
In the first game of the day, the Cowgirls were shut out by Pacific 5-0. The Tigers (3-5) scored one run in the second inning after a Cowgirl error with the bases loaded allowed a runner to be safe at home. In the third inning, after a walk and a hit, Amy Moore hit a single through the left side to score two more runs. Another RBI-single and sacrifice fly were hit in the sixth inning to make the final score 5-0.
The Cowgirls managed just six hits throughout the game, including two by Tamara Brown. Morgan Hawkins started for Oklahoma State and threw three innings, gave up two hits for one earned run, struck out three and walked three. Simone Freeman entered the game in the fourth inning and threw the final four innings, gave up four hits for two runs, struck out two and walked two. Hawkins is now 1-1 on the season.
Oklahoma State will continue play in the Cathedral City Classic tomorrow when they will play Northwestern at 7:30 and No. 15 Arizona at 10:00.
