Garcia a Candidate for Lowe's Award

STILLWATER, Okla. (OSU Athletics The Lowe's Senior Class Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have notable achievements in four areas- community, classroom, character and competition.
A native of Moore, Okla., Garcia has started at shortstop every game for the past three seasons. She has a cumulative grade point average of 3.97 and is majoring in secondary education and mathematics.
She received the 2011 Elite 88 Award for Division 1 softball for being the scholar-athlete at the Women's College World Series with the highest grade point average. In 2011 she was also named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team, University Division. She is a two-time first team Academic All-Big 12 selection and in 2010 was named to first team Academic All-District 6.
In 2011, Garcia finished with a .333 batting average, 60 hits, and a team-high 55 runs batted in. She was named All-Midwest Region first team and All-Big 12 second team for the second straight year.
Garcia has been involved in several volunteer organizations and participated in several community programs including Kids Across America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, she has been a teacher in the kids program at Life Church, volunteered with special education children at a local daycare center, and helped make relief packs to send to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, Division I head coaches and fans who will select one finalist.
