HOUSTON, TEXAS -- The 11th-ranked Oklahoma State softball team split two games in Houston on Saturday, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-1 and losing to No. 20 Houston 3-0. OSU is now 3-1 on the season and will play one more game tomorrow in the Hilton Houston Classic.
In the first game of the day, the Cowgirls rallied in the final three innings to defeat the Islanders after allowing them to score first. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored a run in the third inning from an RBI-double by C Carroll. Oklahoma State tied it up the next inning when senior Kelsey Anchors singled to center field and scored on a single hit by Tamara Brown.
OSU took the lead in the top of the seventh when Brown led off with a single to right field. Freshman Gessenia DeLaCruz bunted to sacrifice Brown to second, but ended up safe at first on an Islander error and Brown advanced to third. Those two base runners would eventually score on passed balls.
After Sam Chrisman was hit by a pitch and Stephanie Brewer walked, senior Sammy Jo Diffendaffer hit a single to right field and scored both runners. Diffendaffer would also score in the next at-bat when Ari Morrison hit an RBI-single down the right field line.
Sophomore Morgan Hawkins got her first start of the season and picked up her first win. She threw the complete game and allowed four hits for one earned run, struck out two and walked just one.
In the second game of the day, the Cowgirls were facing their 2011 Super Regional foe of Houston. The Cougars were able to keep OSU from scoring despite a two-hit seventh inning rally by the Cowgirls. Sophomore Deidre Outon threw the shutout for Houston and picked up her first win of the year. She gave up three hits, struck out three and walked one.
Junior Kat Espinosa threw the complete game for the Cowgirls but picked up her first loss of the year. She allowed five hits for two earned runs, struck out five and walked only one.
Oklahoma State will wrap up the Hilton Houston Classic tomorrow when they play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 9 a.m.
