Cowgirls Open 2012 Season With Two Wins

The 11th-ranked Oklahoma State softball team opened up the 2012 season with two shutout wins against North Texas 2-0 and Sam Houston State 5-0 on the first day of the Houston Hilton Classic. Junior Kat Espinosa threw the second no-hitter of her career against UNT and sophomore Simone Freeman struck out a career single-game high 15 against SHSU.
In the first game of the day, after a four-hour rain delay, OSU (2-0) played North Texas scoreless for five innings. In the top of the sixth senior Kelsey Anchors reached base with a bunt single. Fellow senior Chelsea Garcia advanced Anchors with a sacrifice bunt. Tamara Brown followed with a single up the middle to score Anchors from second. The Cowgirls added an insurance run in the seventh when Anchors hit an RBI-single through the right side to score Sammy Jo Diffendaffer.
Espinosa threw the complete game no-hitter and finished the game with six strikeouts and three walks. She is 1-0.
In the second game of the day against Sam Houston State, the Cowgirls scored early in the first inning. Sophomore Ari Morrison hit a single to the right side and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Anchors. Tamara Brown picked up her second RBI of the day as she hit another single up the middle to score Morrison.
In the fourth inning, freshman Taylor Woodall got the first hit of her collegiate career and it went over the left field fence with two runners on to make the score 4-0. Kelsey Anchors hit the first Cowgirl double of the season in the fifth inning and scored on another hit by Tamara Brown.
Freeman picked up her first win of the season as she struck out 15 batters, a career single-game high for the sophomore. She threw the complete game and only gave up four hits.
Oklahoma State will continue in the Houston Hilton Classic tomorrow when they take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 11 a.m. and Houston at 1 p.m.
