Cowgirls Drop 1-0 Match At Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Oklahoma State suffered its third Big 12 Conference loss Friday night at Mike Myers Stadium as Texas knocked off the 22nd-ranked Cowgirls, 1-0.
With the loss, OSU falls to 10-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in Big 12 play. The last time the Cowgirls lost more than two games in conference play came in 2009 when they finished 5-5-0.
“It was a tough loss in a very closely contested game that could have gone either way,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “We battled hard, and there were a couple of key moments that decided the game. I'm proud of our team's effort but obviously very disappointed we didn't get the result we wanted.”
OSU missed out on a golden scoring opportunity early. After a great pass from the endline by Megan Marchesano, UT defender Ali Schmalz fouled Madison Mercado in box to earn the Cowgirls a penalty kick at the 10:47 mark. Carson Michalowski stepped up for the chance, but her PK hit the crossbar. Michalowski then had a chance off the rebound, but her shot in traffic was saved by UT goalie Abby Smith.
The Longhorns (6-6-1, 3-0-0) would record the game's only goal midway through the opening half when Hannah Higgins took a pass from Kristin Cummins, dribbled past a defender and sent a low shot past AD Franch to put UT on top at the 23:32 mark.
After outshooting Texas by a 5-4 margin in the opening half, OSU continued its attack early in the second and nearly recorded the equalizer in the 56th minute when Kelsey Bass blasted a 40-yard shot that Smith saved over the crossbar with a leaping effort.
The Cowgirls thought they finally did break through with the tying score at the 61:02 mark, but an apparent goal was disallowed by an offsides call. On the play, Michalowski sent a deep ball towards the box. The ball bounced over the head of a charging Smith and was taken by a streaking Marchesano, who converted the open-net attempt before offsides was whistled to erase the score.
Statistically, the match was even. UT owned a 10-8 advantage on shots, with both teams recording five corner kicks and each goalie notching three saves.
The Cowgirls return to action Friday when they host TCU.
