Stillwater, Okla. — Gessenia DeLaCruz hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, and that was all the offense Oklahoma State's softball team would need as the Cowgirls shut out Independence Community College 8-0 here Tuesday evening in fall scrimmage action.
The OSU pitching staff once again silenced the opposing hitters, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out 17 in a combined shutout. Junior Simone Freeman got the start in the circle against Independence and allowed just one hit while striking out eight.
Freshman Chelsea Ross threw the fifth and sixth innings and also allowed just one hit while striking out four. Senior hurler Kat Espinosa threw the final four innings and struck out five without allowing a hit.
DeLaCruz homered over the left-field fence after Samantha Chrisman reached on a line shot to the third baseman in the bottom of the second. One inning later, the Cowgirls added three more runs on three hits and two Lady Pirate errors. Leadoff hitter Ari Morrison had a base hit up the middle, followed by a bunt single by Shannon Kaufman. Tamara Brown got on base when her grounder went through the legs of the Independence shortstop. Morrison scored on the play, and Kaufman scored on a groundout by Ross with one out. Chrisman's double off the fence in left-center field scored Brown, giving OSU a 5-0 lead.
A two-run double by Brown in the bottom of the fourth made the score 7-0 Oklahoma State, and in the sixth inning, after Morrison led off the frame with a base hit, her fourth of the game, she stole second and later scored on an RBI single by Ross.
Oklahoma State has yet to give up a run in 30 innings this fall. The Cowgirls, now 3-0, will host Arkansas in a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. at the Cowgirl Softball Complex.
