TULSA, Okla. -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team opened play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla., on Friday.
The Cowgirls opened the day with two rounds of doubles matches. In their first match, C.C. Sardinha and Meghan Blevins defeated Minnesota's Julia Courter and Yuliana Umanets 9-8(3). In their second round match, Sardinha and Blevins were once again victorious, defeating Victoria Dollar and Marizanne Bouwer of Oral Roberts 8-3. The tournament's top-seeded doubles team of Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana won their second round match as well after receiving a first round bye. The Cowgirl tandem defeated Maria Cardona and Belen Luduena of Kansas 8-5.
Oklahoma State looked to continue its strong play going into singles competition Friday afternoon, and did just that, going 7-1 on the day. Rose went 2-0 on Friday, defeating Drake's Klavdija Rebol 6-3, 6-1 in the first round of singles action and Paula Rincon Otero of Minnesota 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. Meghan Blevins also had a powerful performance in her first day of competition, defeating Nebraska's Maggy Lehmicke 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 in her first round match, and going on to knock off Elisha Gabb of Missouri in two sets. Rose and Blevins will face off Saturday in the round of 16 in what promises to be an interesting match. C.C. Sardinha had a good Friday as well, winning both of her matches. Sardinha defeated Kim Surin of Arkansas 6-1, 6-1 in her first round match and Tulsa's Saana Saarteinen 7-6(4), 7-5 in the second round. Freshman Maria Alvarez fought hard in her first round match against Oklahoma's Hermon Brhane, but fell just short, losing 6-1, 6-7(6), 7-6(5). Alvarez would bounce back in her first round consolation match, however, as she defeated Yuliana Umanets of Minnesota 6-1, 6-1.
The Cowgirls will begin the second day of the tournament with two more rounds of doubles matches on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT.
