Stillwater, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team wrapped up the 2012 fall season on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. OSU won the first game 5-4 in eight innings, and the second game ended in a 0-0 tie after seven frames.
In game one, the Cowgirls took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a triple by freshman Tiffany Mikkelson. Second baseman Ari Morrison led off the inning with the first of five base hits in the game, and Shannon Kaufman followed with a bunt single. With one out, Tamara Brown reached on an infield base hit, but the TU shortstop held Mikkelson at third. In the next at-bat, Brown broke for second on an attempted double steal, and Mikkelson scored when the catcher's throw flew into centerfield.
The Golden Hurricane got two of the runs back in the third, then scored two unearned runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Morrison led off with her third hit of the contest, and after a base hit by Mikkelson with one out advanced Morrison to third, she scored on an infield single by catcher Samantha Chrisman, tying the game at four runs each.
The fifth, sixth and seventh innings went by with no scoring, although TU tried to put the game away in the sixth. With runners on first and second, the Golden Hurricane nine-hole hitter hit a line drive to center. Brown threw the runner on second out at the plate, ending the threat. The Cowgirls had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a fielder's choice and a ground out ended the inning.
After a one-two-three scoreless top of the eighth, back-to-back walks issued to Brown and Gessenia DeLaCruz put runners on first and second with one out. Amy Graham grounded to the shortstop, where the force out at second put Cowgirls on the corners with two down. First baseman Stephanie Brewer came through in the clutch, getting the ball just over the infield and into right field for the game-winning hit.
Game two was a pitchers duel as neither team scored in the seven-inning tie. It was predetermined that the contest would only go seven innings.
After giving up two hits in the top of the first, Cowgirl hurler Simone Freeman was perfect, sitting down 19-consecutive batters and finishing the game with 14 strikeouts. The OSU junior had at least one strikeout in every inning, with two Ks in three of the frames and three strikeouts in two more innings.
Tulsa's Amy Creger was nearly as effective, allowing just two hits and issuing four walks while striking out 10 Cowgirl batters. OSU had a runner on in five different innings, including a leadoff double by Mikkelson in the fourth. The Cowgirls' best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth when a walk and an error gave OSU runners on first and second with no outs. However, Creger struck out Freeman and DeLaCruz, and forced Brown to foul out to end the threat.
Oklahoma State finished the fall season with a 6-1-1 record. The Cowgirls will open the 2013 season on Feb. 8-10 when they travel to St. George, Utah, to compete in the Red Desert Classic.
