Stillwater, Okla. — Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team, fresh off a Women's College World Series appearance last June, is ranked No. 11 nationally in the preseason NFCA Coaches Poll, it was announced today. OSU is ranked 16th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25, also released this morning.
The No. 11 ranking matches the highest preseason ranking in Oklahoma State history. The Cowgirls have been ranked 11th in the preseason poll on three other occasions — 1995, 1997 and 1998 — since the NFCA Poll began in 1995.
Oklahoma State has been ranked every week since Week 4 of 2010, a string of 28-straight polls. The school record is 31-consecutive polls, from Week 8 of 1996 until the preseason poll of 1999.
Of the nine Big 12 schools that participate in softball, six are ranked in the top-25 polls. Joining the Cowgirls in the rankings are: Oklahoma (5th NFCA/6th ESPN.com), Missouri (6/5), Baylor (7/7), Texas A&M (17/15) and Texas (18/19). Texas Tech is receiving votes in both polls.
The Cowgirls are scheduled to play 30 games this season against teams that are receiving votes in the polls, including No. 3 Alabama, eighth-ranked Arizona, No. 16 Oregon, 20th-ranked Houston, No. 21 Nebraska, 22nd-ranked LSU (twice), and No. 24 Tulsa (twice).
