AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. – Oklahoma State freshman tennis player Meghan Blevins recorded perhaps the biggest win of her young career Wednesday as she upset the No. 412 player in the world and top-seeded Alexis King at the Amelia Island $10,000 Women's Championships.
Blevins, who has just three collegiate singles matches under her belt, received a wildcard bid to play in the event and was paired with the No. 1 player in the tournament, King, who is also a former All-American and Florida Gator.
The Cowgirl freshman not only upset one of the top players in the world, but handled her in just two sets, 6-2, 7-5, to earn her first win at a professional event.
“I am really proud of Meghan for getting the victory and working hard this year to make some adjustments in her game,” coach Chris Young said. “She was able to perform really well today and hopefully this is the first of many big wins for her.”
Blevins returns to action Thursday as she takes on Taylor Townsend in round two of the event. Townsend, at No. 439, holds the second-highest ranking of any player in the tournament.
