ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Oklahoma State's women's tennis team finished the final day of competition at the season-opening Georgia Tech Invitational Sunday, highlighted by the first collegiate singles win for freshman Mary Jeremiah and the first singles win of the fall for junior Malika Rose.
"This tournament allowed us to compete with three of the best teams in the country and it will benefit our girls in their development this fall," coach Chris Young said. "We lost several tough matches but battled back today and won a few singles matches. It's a good group that is working hard and will get better."
Jeremiah picked up her first singles victory with an impressive straight-set win over Yale's Annie Sullivan, 6-2, 6-4. That win comes just a day after picking up her first collegiate doubles win with Rose.
Rose, who had lost two tough singles matches to start the tournament, picked up her win over Yale's Blair Seideman, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.
The Cowgirls squared off with Georgia Tech in doubles play. OSU's freshmen duo of Jeremiah and Meghan Blevins faced the No. 6-ranked doubles team in the nation as they fell to Jillian O'Neill and Caroline Lilley, 8-4.
Oklahoma State resumes fall competition Oct. 1 as Kanyapat Narattana and Blevins play in the doubles qualifying round at the 2011 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
