ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The Oklahoma State women's tennis team kicked off its 2011 fall slate Friday with singles and doubles action at the first day of the Georgia Tech Invitational, held at the Windward Club in Alpharetta, Ga.
The event, which also features Georgia, Georgia Tech and Yale, pitted the Cowgirls against the host Yellow Jackets in singles play and against the Georgia Bulldogs in doubles action.
Although the Cowgirls finished 0-6 in singles play against Georgia Tech, who finished No. 13 in the final ITA rankings last year, several Cowgirls played close matches with the Yellow Jackets' five ranked singles players.
Junior Malika Rose, sophomore Leyla Simmons and freshman Mary Jeremiah each took their ranked Geogia Tech counterpart to a deciding third set, but could not finish the upset.
The level of competition did not get any easier in doubles competition as OSU faced Georgia, who finished last year ranked as the eighth-best team in the nation. The Cowgirls lost each of the three matches, 8-4, against top-tier competition.
Play at the event continues Saturday with doubles matches beginning at 2 p.m., followed by singles at approximately 3:30. The weekend will wraps up Sunday with singles matches at 9 a.m. and doubles at 11:30.
