STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State senior defender Melinda Mercado has been named a CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performer of the Week for Week #4.
Mercado anchored the OSU defense from her center back spot and was named to the Trojan Invitational All-Tournament Team after leading the fourth-ranked Cowgirls to the tourney title last week in Los Angeles. On Friday, she helped OSU shutout host USC, 1-0, in the tourney opener, snapping the Trojans' three-game winning streak. On Sunday, Mercado was key in shutting down San Diego star forward Stephanie Ochs, who entered the game with six goals, including two in Friday's tournament win over Texas. Mercado and her defensive teammates limited Ochs to five shots and kept her off the scoreboard in OSU's 2-1 win.
With the two wins, OSU improved to 9-0-0, one win shy of tying the record for the best start in school history. The Cowgirls lead the Big 12 with seven shutouts and a 0.22 goals against average. They have allowed just two goals on the season, the fewest in the conference.
