EUGENE, Ore. - The Oklahoma State track and field program added a fourth qualifier for the NCAA Championships Final Rounds Saturday, as Tom Farrell advanced through the men's 5,000 meters semifinal on the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Farrell, who holds the second-fastest collegiate time in the country in the event this year, finished in fourth place with a time of 13:34.83 to earn an automatic spot in the finals.
He joins Colby Lowe (men's 10,000m), Tone Hjalmarsen (women's 10,000m) and Natalja Piliusina (women's 800 meters) as OSU athletes who have qualified to compete at the final rounds of nationals.
The women's highlight of the day came from Cowgirl senior Mihaela Susa. After battling injury this season, the Cluj-Napoca, Romania native turned in her second-best 1,500 meters time of the year in her final collegiate race.
Susa, who holds the school record at 4:13.08, crossed the line at 4:26.65 to finish in 20th place.
Other OSU athletes who competed Saturday included Andrew Hudson, who placed 40th in the men's discus throw with a toss of 46.64 meters (153-0), Brooke Gritters, who finished 43rd in the women's discus throw with her mark of 43.98 meters (144-3), and Johnathan Stublaski, who competed in the men's 1,500 meters quarterfinal but was unable to finish.
Oklahoma State returns to action when Lowe, Farrell, Piliusina and Hjalmarsen compete at the NCAA Championships Final Rounds, scheduled for June 8-11 at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.
