Waco, Texas -- Oklahoma State scored five runs in the top of the ninth and held off the 16th-ranked Baylor Bears 5-1 here Saturday afternoon before 1,202 fans at Getterman Stadium. The 18th-ranked Cowgirls moved into sole possession of third place in the Big 12 standings.
OSU's scoring outburst in the top of the ninth began with a walk issued to Tamara Brown. The Cowgirl centerfielder scored from first on a double off the left centerfield wall by catcher Ashley Boyd. As Brown rounded third, the BU outfielder missed the cutoff, allowing Brown to slide in safely at home.
A hit batsman and back-to-back singles by the Cowgirls scored pinch runner Kelsea Shultz. Baylor pitcher Whitney Canion was pulled from the game for Liz Paul. With the bases loaded, Ari Morrison walked, making the score 3-0 OSU. A sacrifice fly by Alysia Hamilton made it 4-0. With two outs and runners on first and third, Baylor catcher Clare Hosack tried to throw out Morrison on a steal at second, allowing Gearhart to score easily and give Oklahoma State a comfortable 5-0 lead.
Two defensive plays highlighted the fourth inning. With a runner on second and two outs, OSU's Tamara Brown hit a line drive just to the left of second base, and Baylor shortstop Dani Leal made a diving grab to end the inning. In the bottom half of the frame and with a runner on second, designated player Liz Paul hit a single to right field. Bear coach Glenn Moore sent the runner home, and Sammy Jo Diffendaffer made a fine play, throwing Leal out at home.
Cowgirl senior Sarah Odom started in the circle for OSU and threw 5-1/3 innings, scattering four hits while walking four and striking out three. Sophomore Kat Espinosa came on in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and forced the next to batters to pop up, ending the inning.
Espinosa allowed one inconsequential run in the bottom of the ninth, giving up one run while walking two and striking out one in 3-2/3 innings. She improved to 19-5.
Oklahoma State (36-11 overall, 7-4 Big 12) will host the No. 15 Oklahoma Sooners (34-14, 7-6) on Wednesday, April 27, at 7 pm at the Cowgirl Softball Complex.
