LINCOLN, Neb. – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team moved to 1-1 in Big 12 play Saturday after dropping a tough match that came down to the final point at 30th-ranked Nebraska, 4-3.
“It's definitely tough losing the amount of close matches we have this year, but I am proud of our girls for the way they competed today,” coach Chris Young said.
The Cowgirls, who opened conference play with a win at Iowa State Friday, started the dual on a high note as C.C. Sardinha and Malika Rose handled Nebraska's Patricia Veresova and Maike Zeppernick, 8-3, on the No. 3 court.
Although OSU served for the doubles point in both remaining matches, the Huskers answered with tiebreaker wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to come back and gain an early 1-0 advantage.
OSU's Sarah Meghoufel and Kanyapat Narattana quickly responded in singles play with wins over their Husker opponents at Nos. 6 and 5, respectively, to give the Cowgirls a 2-1 advantage, but Nebraska's Stefanie Weinstein and Madeleine Geibert gave the Huskers a pair of wins at Nos. 3 and 1, respectively, to reclaim the lead.
With only two matches remaining, the Cowgirls needed to win both for the dual victory.
Rose picked up a two-set win at No. 4 singles to tie the match at 3-3 and improve her outstanding dual record to 11-0, but OSU fell just short in its upset-bid as Sasha Belova fell to NU's Veresova in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6.
“We have to keep improving and be ready for a tough weekend with Baylor and Tech next weekend at home,” Young said. “It will be nice to finally play in Stillwater and we look forward to the support of a home crowd.”
Oklahoma State, 4-8 overall, resumes play Saturday for its first home match of the year against 10th-ranked Baylor. The first serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the DeBois Tennis Complex and admission is free.
