STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team hosted its first home match of the 2011 season Saturday as the Cowgirls fell to No. 9 Baylor, 6-1, at the DeBois Tennis Complex.
The Cowgirls played Baylor closely in all three doubles matches to start the day, but the Bears took control down the stretch to sweep doubles competition and earn a 1-0 lead. OSU's Sasha Belova and Nataliya Shatkovskaya held a 7-4 lead over Baylor's Karoline Filipiak and Nina Secerbegovic on the No. 1 court, but couldn't hold on as the BU duo came back for a 9-7 win.
“We definitely had plenty of opportunities on all three doubles matches,” coach Chris Young said. “We also competed and had great opportunities at Nos. 3-6 singles. Baylor has a great team and they stepped up when the match was on the line.”
Baylor continued its impressive play in singles competition as its five ranked singles athletes each claimed wins for a 6-1 team victory.
OSU senior Sarah Meghoufel earn the Cowgirls' team point with a tiebreaker win over BU's Taylor Ormond, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Malika Rose, playing at the No. 3 spot for the first time in her career, saw her perfect season come to an end at the hands of Baylor's 44th-ranked Diana Nakic. The sophomore fell, 6-2, 6-3, and moves to 11-1 this spring.
The Cowgirls also dropped closely contested matches at the Nos. 4 and 5 spots, 7-5, 6-3 and 7-6(3), 7-5, respectively.
“It's disappointing to lose like this when we had so many chances to win matches, but that's what we have to get better at,” Young said. “We have to move on because we have another good team coming in here tomorrow.”
OSU returns to action Sunday for a doubleheader with the men's team at the DeBois Tennis Complex. The first serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. when the women take on No. 49 Texas Tech. The men's match against fourth-ranked Texas will follow at the conclusion of the first match. Admission is free and fans will be provided with free Pizza Hut pizza and drinks between matches.
