AMES, Iowa – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team opened Big 12 play with an impressive win Friday, taking down Iowa State, 5-2, at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.
“This team has had to battle all year and today it all came together,” coach Chris Young said. “We lost a tough doubles point but I loved our focus and determination in fighting back. I am proud of Nataliya and Sarah for being good leaders today. In the end our depth was the deciding factor and I believe it will give us a chance to win each time out.”
The Cowgirls started the day by narrowly surrendering the doubles point to the Cyclones. After splitting the Nos. 1 and 3 matches, Sasha Belova and Sarah Meghoufel fell in tiebreaker to Simona Cacciuttolo and Erin Karonis, 9-7 (10-8), to give Iowa State the early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, however, OSU responded with several dominant performances and won five of the six matches to seal the dual win.
Senior Nataliya Shatkovskaya picked up a three-set win at the No. 1 spot while C.C. Sardinha, Malika Rose, Kanyapat Narattana and Meghoufel won in straight sets at No. 3-6, respectively.
Rose, a sophomore, improves her perfect dual record to 10-0 on the year with her victory. She is now 2-0 at the No. 4 spot.
The Cowgirls, 4-7 (1-0), resume play Sunday afternoon against Nebraska in Lincoln.
