Cowgirls Advance With WNIT Win Over Pepperdine

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's basketball team knocked off Pepperdine, 81-74, in the first round of WNIT action on Wednesday night in front of 1,239 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Despite shooting 55 percent from the floor in the first half, the Cowgirls (17-14) trailed 42-41 at the intermission due to the Waves' (18-12) outside shooting.
Pepperdine got 21 first-half points from Katie Menton, who drilled four of her five 3-point attempts. Overall, the Waves connected on eight of their 14 attempts from beyond the arc in the half.
OSU countered with a big offensive half from Toni Young. The sophomore hit eight of her eleven shots from the floor and went into the break with 17 points and nine rebounds. Young finished the night with her Big 12-leading 14th double-double after logging a career-high 34 points and 18 rebounds.
In the second half, the Cowgirls used a 10-2 run to extend the lead to 56-48, but were unable to shake Pepperdine, which cut the lead to one on three occasions over the next three minutes.
With 4:54 remaining, Menton drilled her fifth 3-pointer of the night to cut the margin to 71-70, but Young answered with four of OSU's next six points and pushed the margin back to six with less than a minute remaining.
For the game, the Cowgirls shot a season-best 56 percent from the floor.
Joining Young in double figures for OSU was freshman Kendra Suttles, who scored 10 points off the bench.
Menton paced the Waves with 29 points on the night.
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Monday when they play at Wyoming at 8 p.m. (CST).
