LAS VEGAS - Oklahoma State's men's golf team posted a 2-under 286 during its second round at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters on Saturday to gain sole possession of third place at Southern Highlands Golf Club.
The Cowboys entered the day in the day in a four-way deadlock for the third spot, but used their 2-under score to move four shots ahead of UCLA at the par-72, 7,510-yard layout. OSU will begin its final round tomorrow with a 4-over total of 580 and 10 shots off the pace of leader California, which fired a 12-under 276 to surge into the lead. The Bears will enter Round 3 six shots ahead of Texas A&M.
A&M's Jordan Russell carded a 1-under 71 to remain atop the individual leaderboard at 9-under 139. However, OSU junior Morgan Hoffmann shaved three strokes off Russell's lead with a 68 and stands alone in second place at 137.
Much like his first round, Hoffmann was solid all day, carding five birdies against just one bogey. Just as he did on Friday, the Wyckoff, N.J., native played an error-free front nine that included three birdies to turn at 3-under 33 and his lone bogey once again came at the par-4 11th. Hoffmann bounced back with birdies at Nos. 14 and 17 to move to 4-under for the day.
Sean Einhaus joined Hoffmann in the top 10 after signing for his second-straight 72. The sophomore's even-par 144 total has him tied for seventh.
Senior Kevin Tway bounced back from an opening round 80 with a 2-under 70 to move up 34 spots into a tie for 31st place at 150.
After opening with a 76, junior Peter Uihlein posted a 77 and is tied for 49th at 153. Also among the group at 154 is Cowboy freshman Talor Gooch, who posted a 76 of his own on Saturday.
OSU will begin its final round at 9:30 a.m. (PST) and will be grouped with California and Texas A&M.
