HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Oklahoma State's men's golf team posted a 36-hole total of 575, 15-over par, on Monday to lead at the midway point of the Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
The top-seeded Cowboys opened with a 3-over 283 during the morning round at the par-70, 6,759-yard layout to hold a three-shot advantage over Nebraska, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. OSU saw that lead swell to as many as eleven shots during the afternoon round, but after finishing at 12-over 292 the Cowboys will take a three-shot cushion over Texas into play tomorrow. The Longhorns posted a 578 total, while Oklahoma came in at 579 and in third place.
A pair of Cowboys stand atop the individual standings as well with senior Kevin Tway and junior Morgan Hoffmann posting 1-under 139 totals to lead the field by one shot.
Tway opened with a 66 during the morning round that included seven birdies to stand alone in first. The Edmond, Okla., native started his day with four-straight pars before sandwiching four birdies around a bogey on his first nine at the 16th to turn at 3-under 32. With birdies at Nos. 3, 5 and 7, Tway got to 6-under for the round before a double bogey-par finish.
After making birdie on his first two holes during round two, Tway endured a stretch of five-straight bogeys to head to the back nine at 3-over 38. However, he settled in with seven pars, one birdie and a bogey on his back side to get in with a 73 and tied with Hoffmann.
Hoffmann, who won the event as a freshman two years ago at Prairie Dunes, parred his first 13 holes before making his first birdie of the day at the fifth. After bogeys at the sixth and eighth, his birdie at the seventh got him in with a 70 and tied for eighth.
The Wyckoff, N.J., native was impressive during his second round, finishing as one of just two players in the 60-player field to break 70 in the afternoon. Hoffmann posted a 69 to join Tway in first place. Hoffmann made the turn at 2-under 33 with birdies at the second and sixth. After making three bogeys over his first six holes on the inward nine, he closed with birdies at Nos. 16 and 17 to move back under par for the round.
Freshman Talor Gooch opened his first-ever Big 12 Championship with a 73 before adding a 75 during the afternoon to stand at 148 and tied for 25th.
Junior Peter Uihlein opened with a 74 before signing for a 75 during his second round to finish at 149 and tied for 31st.
Sophomore Sean Einhaus finished the day tied for 46th place after posting rounds of 79 and 76 for a 155 total.
The Cowboys will begin their third round tomorrow at 8:50 a.m. (CST) and will be grouped with Texas and Oklahoma.
