HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Behind a record-setting day, Oklahoma State's men's golf team expanded its lead to 12 shots on Tuesday with one round remaining at the Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
Leading by three after two rounds, OSU created some separation from the field with a tournament-record 270 that featured a new league standard with four rounds in the 60s. The Cowboys had the previous records for both with a 272 in 2000 that had three players posted sub-70 scores.
The Cowboys' 10-under tally moved them to 5-over 845 through three rounds at the par-70, 6,759-yard layout. Texas A&M came in at 857 and alone in second place, while Texas finished the day in third at 862.
OSU's Morgan Hoffmann entered the round tied for the individual lead with teammate Kevin Tway before firing a 68 to move three shots clear of Tway. The Wyckoff, N.J., posted a clean front nine that featured eight pars and a birdie at the fourth to make the turn at 1-under 34. Hoffmann continued his string of pars over the first six holes of his inward nine before a birdie-bogey-birdie finish to get in at 2-under for the round.
Through three rounds, Hoffmann stands at 3-under 207 and as the lone player under par in the field.
Tway posted a 71 on Tuesday to finish at even-par 210 and two shots clear of Texas A&M's Jordan Russell. The Edmond, Okla., native recovered from a double bogey at the fourth with a pair of birdies to go out with an even-par 35 on his front nine. Tway carded seven consecutive pars on his second nine before making his lone bogey at the 17th to finish at 1-over for the day.
Freshman Talor Gooch vaulted from a tie for 25th into a tie for eighth place at 215 after firing a career-best 3-under 67. Gooch stood at 1-over through five holes before an eagle at the par-5 seventh and a birdie at the eighth quickly moved him into red figures. The Midwest City, Okla., native added birdies at the 12th and 13th before bouncing back from a pair of bogeys with his fifth birdie of the day at the 18th.
Junior Peter Uihlein moved up 12 spots into a tie for 19th at 218 after posting a 1-under 69. The Orlando, Fla., native bogeyed his second hole before settling in with a string of 11-straight pars. Uihlein logged back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th to move under par.
The round of the day came from sophomore Sean Einhaus, who matched Russell with a career-best 66 to move from a tie for 46th into a tie for 29th. With birdies at the third and the sixth, Einhaus made the turn at 1-under 34. The Borken, Germany native carded four birdies on his inward nine to get to 5-under par. Einhaus came up just short in his attempt to match Anders Hultman's 65 as the low round by a Cowboy in the event after making a bogey at the closing 18th.
The Cowboys will look to secure their fifth consecutive Big 12 title tomorrow when then begin their fourth round at 8:50 a.m. (CST). OSU will be grouped with Texas A&M and Texas.
