STILLWATER - The No. 57 Oklahoma State women's tennis team faces Arkansas and SMU this weekend at The Greens Country Club in Oklahoma City. During Friday's 6 p.m. matchup with the Razorbacks, coach Chris Young and the Cowgirls will be "Serving for Solomon," providing an opportunity for fans to help with a special cause.
"This season our program is helping to raise both funds and awareness for the rare disease that plagues Solomon Littleton, a 7-year-old boy in Oklahoma City," Young said. "For the past two years he has not spoken a word. As we listened to his father, Eric, talk to our team, he was urging his son to say hi to each of us. Although he wasn't speaking, he was running around and giving high-fives to the girls and coaches, which was a blessing."
The Cowgirls' efforts to help Littleton, who suffers from a rare neurological disorder called Landau-Kleffner syndrome, include free admission to Friday's match and unique "Serving for Solomon" shirt giveaways. Fans are encouraged to make donations, with all proceeds going to the Littleton family. There will also be a small silent auction featuring gift cards and other OSU items.
Arkansas, ranked No. 14 by the ITA, is 4-0 this season and coming off of an upset win over No. 4 Notre Dame for a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. OSU holds a 10-2 overall advantage over Arkansas, with the Razorbacks winning last year's season opener.
The Cowgirls finish up the weekend Sunday at noon against No. 27 SMU. The Mustangs are 4-1 in 2011 and coming off of a 4-3 win over No. 33 Ohio State. The all-time series is knotted at 6-6, with SMU winning last year's match in Dallas, 4-3.
"SMU is also a top 25 program, so we have a great weekend of matches," Young said. "I encourage anyone in the Oklahoma City area to come out and support the team."
