Cowgirl Equestrian Falls in New Mexico

Despite outscoring their opponent in total points, the No. 4 Oklahoma State women's equestrian team fell to the New Mexico State Aggies, 6-4, Saturday in a western-only show.
"We were riding at a very high level," coach Larry Sanchez said. "We just made some mistakes that ultimately beat us."
The Cowgirls came out on top of the individual total score, 736.5-734.5, but only won four of the ten head-to-head matchups. The loss is just the second of the season for the western team.
Lauren Halvorson led the Cowgirls in horsemanship with her 82-80 head-to-head victory. The redshirt freshman earned her second MVP honor of the season with her performance. The win improves her individual record to 7-1 on the year. Senior Courtney Whitacre added a win in the discipline, her fifth of the season.
Junior Rachel Houchin and sophomore Christy McElreath earned wins for the Cowgirls in reining, but it wasn't enough as the Aggies took the discipline by a 3-2 margin. Houchin improved to 6-1-1 season and McElreath improved to 5-2-1 on the season.
The Cowgirls are back in action when they host the top-ranked Texas A&M in Stillwater on Feb. 27.
Elser Named Champion of Consolation Bracket at Collegiate Equitation Challenge
Cowgirl freshman Sammy Elser earned champion honors in the consolation bracket at the Winter Equestrian Festival Collegiate Equitation Challenge in Wellington, Fla., Friday afternoon. She fell to Maggie McAlary from Auburn, 85-79, in the opening round before running the table to take top honors in the consolation bracket.
