Cowgirl Tennis Wraps Up First Day of Clay Court Classic

SARASOTA, Fla. – Two Oklahoma State singles competitors advanced to the quarterfinals after the first day of competition at the 2011 Dick Vitale/Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic on Friday.
After first round byes, freshmen Meghan Blevins and Mary Jeremiah each won their only match of the day to advance in the tournament. Blevins defeated JoHanna Manningham of Notre Dame, 6-3, 6-2, while Jeremiah beat Roseline Dion of Mississippi State, 7-6(2), 6-4.
Blevins will face off against Alyssa Hibberd from Memphis on Saturday, while Jeremiah will take on Stefanie Mikesz of Memphis.
The doubles tandem of Blevins and Jeremiah also advanced to the semifinals of the doubles bracket. After receiving a first round by, the duo beat Yana Mavrina and Paola Calderon of Temple, 8-1. They will play Cortney Collins and Hibberd from Memphis on Saturday.
In doubles action, Malika Rose and C.C. Sardinha teamed up to defeat Dion and Petra Ferancova of Mississippi State, 9-7, in the first round, but fell to Britney Sanders and Katherine White of Notre Dame in the quarterfinal round, 8-0.
Also in singles play, Rose lost a close battle to Mariya Slupska of Memphis in the second round. After taking the first set, 6-2, she dropped the final two 7-5, 6-4. In first round action, Sardinha lost to Hibberd of Memphis, 7-5(6), 6-2.
