Cowgirls Run Past Hillcats, 10-4

Stillwater, Okla. -- Oklahoma State scored in six of 10 innings and the Cowgirls defeated Rogers State in exhibition softball action 10-4 here Wednesday evening at the Cowgirl Softball Complex. OSU improved to 4-1 on the fall season.
Oklahoma State fell behind early, giving up two runs on on three hits in the top of the first. However, the Cowgirls evened the score in the bottom of the frame on an run-scoring double by Julie Ward and an RBI groundout by Amy Graham.
OSU took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second when Sammy Jo Diffendaffer scored from second on a base hit up the middle by freshman Shelby Davis.
After a scoreless third inning, the Hillcats added two more runs to the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. RSU scored runs on back-to-back plays and took a 4-3 lead. The Cowgirls matched the Hillcats once again in the bottom of the inning and this time, took the lead for good. With runners on second and third, senior Chelsea Garcia hit a double to right center, giving OSU a 5-4 advantage.
The Cowgirls added two runs in the fifth on a couple of errors by the Rogers State defense, and added another in the sixth on an RBI single by Tarah Ettinger. OSU added two more runs in the ninth to make the final score 10-4.
Davis went 3-for-4 in the game with a pair of runs scored and fellow freshman Gessenia DeLaCruz went 3-for-5 with a two runs as well. The Cowgirls belted out 16 hits in the game, giving the pitching staff plenty of run support.
Morgan Hawkins threw the first five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out four. Simone Freeman threw the final five frames and didn't allow a hit, striking out eight while walking two.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 11, as the Cowgirls host Connors State in a 10-inning game at 6 pm at Cowgirl Stadium.
